Are You Sure You’re Ready to Restore an Antique Car?
The idea of restoring an antique car is romantic, especially
for men who actually sometimes prefer a perfect antique car to a
perfect woman!
Sure, that car might look like a pile of junk in Joe’s back yard now,
but just wait until you get through restoring it. People at the local
car show will gaze in amazement. The question is, will they be gazing
at your finished car or the hunk of junk that simply changed yards?
Before you commit to restoring an antique car, research your options
and ask yourself these questions:
* Will you do all of the restoration work yourself? Are you qualified?
* Do you have time?
* Just how important is it to have your car in perfect condition when
it’s finished?
* Are you going to be finicky about using only original parts – or are
you willing to compromise to save time and money by using some replica
pieces?
* What do you want to do with the car when it’s finished? Will you use
it daily? Is it primarily for show?
* What is the timeline for your restoration project? (It’s easier to
put the project off if you never make a timeline)
* When will the project be finished?
* How much will you pay for the car?
* How much will full restoration realistically cost?
* Can you make a profit? Do you expect to make a profit?
The truth is, there is rarely any profit in restoring an antique car
unless you are charging someone else who owns the car for labor by the
hour. If you are a beginner, start with a car that is in pretty good
condition to begin with. Yes, you might pay a little more for such a
car, but you will spend less time and money restoring it.
