Decide Early What Type of Antique Clock You Plan to
Collect
If you are a beginning antique clock collector, you have your
work cut out for you. There are many different time periods,
manufacturers, countries of origin, qualities, types and designs to be
considered. Before you buy your first antique clock, become familiar
with the history of clocks and decide on what kinds of clocks you will
focus your search.
France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland are credited with creating the
first domestic clocks. The first clocks were mounted directly to the
wall. They had an open-frame construction that featured a bell within
the spire. Weights drove these early masterpieces. In the late 15th
century, the mainspring sprung forth and portable clocks were born. If
you find one of these clocks from the early 16th century, consider
yourself extremely lucky because they are rare and – depending on their
condition – can be extremely valuable.
The hobby of collecting antique clocks is complicated by the fact that
you have much more to consider than the appearance and condition of the
exterior. The interior of an antique clock can be just as important and
a working antique clock with original parts is like candy to the
collector.
When you shop for antique clocks, if your purpose is to invest in
history, avoid clocks with authentic exteriors that have been gutted
and refilled with new mechanical parts. As with any antique collector,
it should be your goal to get the best antique clock in the best
possible condition for the lowest price. But, be fair. Research the
average costs of the types of clocks you are looking for and expect to
pay what these clocks are worth unless you get lucky and find a sleeper
at a bargain basement price.
Depending on the age, style, condition, maker and availability of an
antique clock a serious collector will pay anywhere from several
hundred to several thousands of dollars. Know your market and know
where the types of clocks you seek are most likely to turn up.
